What would have changed if there were several victims found in the hallways/rooms?  Considerations for VES?  MCI thoughts?

Attack Line placement

Post comments about attack line placement.  What would you have done differently if you had another chance (if anything).  Would it have changed if the fire were located on the third floor?

So how does this work?

Think of any issues that you have or anything to add to the conversation, and simply post it to the comments.  I'll try to keep it organized and easy to read.  Sometimes reading other posts helps spur conversation and encourages discourse.  Please don't be shy, state what you want.  Be as constructive as possible and provide possible solutions or considerations to problems if known.

(Remember that this is a public forum and that anyone can read what is posted.)

Personal critique on 3rd alarm appt fire

After the department fire critique was completed, I feel as though there were some things that could be  addressed to help me improve, and grow as a new company officer.  I thought that the fire was executed amazingly well and that the outcome was something that we can all be proud of.  That being stated, I'm a sucker for self improvement and honest evaluation of performance.  My ego is not fragile.  I want to know what could be improved.  There are always ways to improve. There were many things that occurred that day that we "lucked out" on.

 For example:
- The fire occurred during the daytime with minimal residents
- The size of the fire was relatively small with minimal extension to other units
- Gate access to the building could have been locked and reflex time therefore delayed
- Victim was on 3rd floor and not any higher (with 24')
- Victim actually lived when 'self rescuing' despite being overwhelmed by smoke.
- There was no flash-over despite conditions found on the second floor
- Kinks in the attack line were resolved with assistance from back-up (M1, E13) crews

I have sent out this invite to each person hoping to gain insight and truly evaluate what you would change if they could, and what would they do if something different had occurred.

I encourage all of you to think critically and please don't be afraid to ask questions, or give opinions.  That's why this is all happening.  Fragile/inflated ego (in my opinion) is the most dangerous condition seen in the fire service, and will not allow sincere introspective self improvement.

Please join in the discussion and contribute whatever knowledge you have.

Sincerely,
Derek
